The Web of Life
by wildflower chapel on Tuesday 30
November 2004
As with life this begins with a story. The setting takes place high in the
Rocky Mountains at a retreat for healing. Off in the distance a thunderstorm
is brewing throwing the scent of rain off the pine forest. Upon entering
the retreat this fresh scent is washed away by the smell of fresh baked cookies.
Ahh decadence at its best and the fastest way to this mans heart. Whoops,
sorry I’m getting side tracked. Seems to happen often in life but back to
the story. Upon entering we’re introduced to Alexis Hmielak, Alexis it seems
has a knack for creating a picture of you and your spirit animal. Not just
your life long animal totem but also any particular critter that’s trying
to grab your attention in this moment. Well after a little persuasion from
this beautiful blond I know, I find myself sitting in front of Alexis for
a portrait. Now I’m thinking this little lady is in for quite a shock cause
there’s no telling what kind of critter is after this old fart. In the background
I hear the noise of bets being placed. Seems one gal in particular is certain
it will have to be an animal with horns if its going to fit me. Well I’m
sure of one thing there were no bets collected that day. That’s because my
guide that day was a SPIDER. I think that threw more than just a few people
off track. Now personally I have nothing against spiders. In fact, I’ve on
more than one occasion considered it my privilege to accelerate them upon
their evolutionary path. Guess I’ll have to look at that issue some.
Anyway, here I am looking at a spider coming out of my third eye and wondering
where this is going to lead me. I mean, I already see the puzzled look in Alexis’s
eyes and the stares from others. So we grab the book,” Animal-Speak” by Ted
Andrews and start reading. Now this is interesting. It seems the ancient mystery
schools had above one of there portals the saying, “Know Thyself and Thou Shalt
Know the Universe!” Hmm does that mean to find yourself and spirit you must
go within? The spider it seems, reminds us that we are the center of our own
world. We spin the web of our own illusion. The magic of the web is that it
links the past with the future. Perhaps we should look at this web.
When a spider spins its web, it uses different types of webbing. Those that
radiate out from the center are composed of silk. While the concentric rings
that you see are composed of a sticky substance, which is used to catch its
prey. The spider learns to walk the silk strands unless it too becomes entangled
in its own web. It learns to seek the center of its own creation. The concentric
rings form a spiral. In ancient traditions such as the Egyptians, Celtics,
Mayans, and Toltecs, this formed the spiral of life. This represents time.
Time in our world is both linear and cyclical. In other words, we move not
only from point A to point B but we do this in cycles. Season’s change, the
sun rises and sets, all are spinning around yet going forward at the same time.
Yet it is this spiral of life that can entangle us and trap us within our own
illusion. A large part of the stickiness of the web is the emotions we choose
to experience. They become our trap and yet they are an illusion created by
our own choices in life. The only one responsible for the feeling of an emotion
is YOU. There are other traits of the spider that we should also look at. The
spider has eight eyes. Yet when walking its web it does not rely upon the perception
of those eight eyes. It relies on its sense of feeling. It feels its way both
to its prey and its center of creation. It feels the vibratory pathway of its
being. Sensing both its rewards and that which could ensnare it. The other
feature that the spider possesses is a double- segmented body. This is unique
in the insect world and when placed on its side represents the figure eight.
Just like its eight eyes. In numerology the number eight represents infinity,
power, and balance. Infinity represents the unlimited possibilities that exist
within us. Power is the ability to choose the possibility we wish to express
and the balance to walk our choice within this world. Perhaps we should look
at ways in which we can walk the web of our life.
Ninety-nine percent of the people in this world are stuck in a web of their
own making. The voice in your head, EGO, lies to you. These are lies that most
people live by. We let everything outside of ourselves make the choices for
us. We don’t take responsibility for our own choices or lies. In fact, most
people don’t even know their own choices or lies. You are perfect. You have
always been perfect. However, the voice in your head will not allow you to
believe this. Ego will tell you, you are fat, no good, not capable, not worthy,
why would anyone want you, etc. etc. etc. Then if this approach does not work
at controlling you. Ego will tell you that the other person is fat, no good,
unworthy, etc. etc. etc. Soon this web of entanglement becomes so tight and
surrounds you so well, that this is all that you can see. You believe this
is you. You are trapped in a cocoon of limited awareness. One which you have
woven around yourself and obstructs your own view. Your awareness depends upon
what you can see. If you are trapped within your own web, then that is all
that can be reflected back to you. We believe this is our world. We agreed
to this story. If we come across someone one else who does not believe in our
personal story, we try to pull him or her into our web. So that they too will
limit themselves as we have limited ourselves according to our own story. If
we wish to play victim than so should others. We try to always make another
as small or smaller than ourselves. This is how EGO takes over and creates
the web of illusion.
A favorite tactic of EGO is to place the blame outside of us. Then we cannot
be the responsible party. We will not attempt to become self-aware and end
the control of EGO. It does this through appearance. You must look this way.
However, you will never look that way to EGO. You will always be too fat, too
thin, and too old, no BOOBS, or you have a too LITTLE ______, you get the picture.
It’s one you will never win. If you can never be happy until you get something
i.e. sex, love, or money, then guess what? You’ll never be happy. This is the
favorite trick of ego. It takes you away from you and places you in the trap
of the web. Yet emotions are your savior. They are the voice of God, telling
you that you once again listened to EGO. When you feel anger or hate, don’t
project it out at someone else or beat your own self up. Just realize that
God is telling you that EGO has lied to you and abused you so you are feeling
bad. Now go inside yourself and realize it’s a lie an illusion and not the
true you. Take away the power from EGO. You and only you have the power to
choose the truth and this truth will set you free. Once you stop believing
your Ego’s lies than you will not believe in the lies of other peoples Ego’s.
Then you will find peace. Put another way, Don Miguel Ruiz states it like this, “Don’t
believe yourself and don’t believe anyone else it’s only a story.”
You are free when you no longer have to be you or the story you created. Awareness
means taking responsibility for your life. Most of the web of your life is
created with no awareness. The people who create with awareness create with
love. At the Wildflower we work with you to step out of the illusion and create
for yourself.
